Cyber Crime Laws in India
Several laws in India protect against online abuse:
Information Technology Act (IT Act)
Protects against privacy violation, obscene material, and identity theft.
- Section 66E: Violation of privacy (capturing/publishing private images).
- Section 67/67A: Electronic transmission of obscene/sexually explicit material.
- Section 67B: Child sexual abuse material.
- Section 66C: Identity theft.
- Section 66D: Cheating by personation.
Indian Penal Code (IPC)
Note: IPC has been replaced by Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS), but these sections were relevant historically.
- Section 354A/B/C/D: Sexual harassment, voyeurism, stalking.
- Section 503/506/507: Criminal intimidation.
- Section 499: Defamation.
Other Acts
- Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act: Prohibits indecent representation in published material.
- POSH Act (2013): Protection against sexual harassment at workplace.
- SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act: Protections against insults and intimidation based on caste.
- POCSO Act: Protection of children from sexual offences.
